Christmas markets in Tyrol and Salzburg
Christmas markets – also called “Christkindlmarkt” in Austria – are now in high season again. They get you in the mood for the festive season with traditional culinary treats, handmade goods and gift ideas as well as one or two “warmth units” from the inside. Mulled wine, punch or “Jagatee” is what they call it. Our VAYAs are located in the most beautiful places in the Austrian Alps, as you surely know. The good news for all Christmas fans: Christmas markets in Tyrol and Salzburg are particularly atmospheric. Here are the best tips close to your VAYA home base:
Christmas market in Tirol, Innsbruck
Until 23 December, Innsbruck’s old town is transformed into a magical Christmas wonderland every day from 11am to 9pm. Here you can experience the pre-Christmas season from its traditional side. And at the same time, of course, enjoy the view of one of the city’s most important sights: the Golden Roof. Christmas tree decorations, handicrafts, woollen goods and small souvenirs will delight your shopping heart. From the viewing platform you have a great view of the action.
Until Epiphany Day on 6 January 2023, you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a modern sea of lights in Maria-Theresien-Strasse every day from 11 am to 9 pm. Here, numerous trees are decorated with thousands of small lights. And on the Marktplatz, too, Christmas spirit is the order of the day until 23 December. Families with children can experience anticipation at its best at the Marktplatz am Inn – including Punch and Judy shows and fairy tales.
Another top tip is “Lumagica“. Here, the amazed guests can experience larger-than-life moose, illuminated kangaroos, colourful camels and penguins as well as the Statue of Liberty in an allegorical “journey around the world”. She even makes stops in London and Paris.
Easily accessible: From VAYA Kühtai you can reach the Innsbruck Christmas markets in about 45 minutes by car, from VAYA Seefeld it takes about 30 minutes.

Seefeld
Almost directly in front of the gates of VAYA Seefeld you will find the beautiful pedestrian zone of the village. In the run-up to Christmas, it is transformed into a Christmas village every day from 2pm to 9pm. Charming huts in Tyrolean log cabin style await visitors. They offer regional handicrafts, gift ideas and, of course, hearty culinary delights. On certain dates, the Seefeld Weisenbläser also perform.
Easily accessible: It’s only a short walk from VAYA Seefeld. You can even enjoy a mulled wine twice.

Zell am See
At the Sternenadvent market on the town square you can stroll between lovingly decorated huts, treat yourself to freshly roasted almonds, delicious biscuits and a mulled wine or punch or two. The market is open daily from 3 pm until 23 December.
Easily accessible: It is about five minutes by car from VAYA Zell am See. From VAYA Post Saalbach you can reach it in less than 20 minutes by car.

Kitzbühel
The historic town centre of Kitzbühel is already quite picturesque without winter, Christmas and snow. But when all three elements come together, a particularly magical atmosphere is created. From Wednesday to Sunday, you can stroll among the festively decorated stalls at the Christmas market in Kitzbühel. Of course, the ingredients of any good Christmas market can also be found here: Culinary delights, hot drinks and pretty handicrafts. Live music by local groups, performances and historical readings round out the offerings. Open from 2pm to 8pm.
Easily accessible: VAYA Fieberbrunn is only 30 minutes away by car.
