In autumn, nature puts on its most beautiful dress. The golden light of the autumn sun transforms the colourful leaves into a breathtaking spectacle. Until winter begins, hiking and mountain biking enthusiasts are in high season. Conveniently, you will find countless opportunities to enjoy nature around each of our VAYA houses. But what if you feel like a change of pace or the weather doesn’t cooperate? Fortunately, there are numerous autumnal excursion destinations in Salzburg that are not far from one of our VAYAs.

#1: Salzburg city
You can reach the city of Salzburg from almost all of our houses in the province of the same name in about one and a half hours by car. In addition to a visit to the fortress and a walk through the picturesque old town, you should definitely treat yourself to a Bach cube from Fürst. Salzburgers swear by this sweet delicacy and find it far better than the classic Mozartkugeln. You should treat yourself to a coffee at the m32 restaurant on the Mönchsberg. From here you have an excellent view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress. With a built-up area of over 7,000 square metres, it is one of the largest fortresses in Europe.
Mirabell Palace with its beautiful garden and Hellbrunn Palace are further autumnal destinations in Salzburg. Exciting guided tours bring the history of the city on the Salzach River back to life. In bad weather, the House of Nature is a great option. There you can experience the most fascinating aspects of flora and fauna completely independently of the weather. A special experience for families is a visit to Salzburg Zoo. Culture vultures can enjoy concerts, musical walks and performances during the Salzburg Culture Days from mid-September to the end of October.
#2: Salzburg farmer’s autumn
From mid-August to November, the Salzburg Bauernherbst takes place throughout the province. This tradition has been going on for more than 25 years. You have the opportunity to get to know traditional farm life during craft demonstrations, hikes, guided tours through the farm garden, cooking courses, harvest festivals, alpine pastures and traditional events. Many different places and communities in Salzburg serve as event locations.
#3: Museum Kaprun
Not far from VAYA Kaprun and easily accessible from our other Salzburg accommodations you will find the Museum Kaprun. Housed in a 400-year-old stone farmhouse, you can experience the history of the village up close. And all this on more than 140 square metres. The museum is open from December to October.
#4: Distillery Enn, Saalbach
The schnapps distillery in Enn is a great place to visit in rainy weather – and sunshine. Here you can learn everything about the fine art of distilling. At the same time, you can taste Sebastian Schwaighofer’s award-winning schnapps.
#5: Mining museum & exhibition mine, Leogang
The Leogang Mining Museum is only half an hour away from VAYA Post Saalbach. From VAYA Fieberbrunn and VAYA Zell am See you can get there even faster. There is a lot to see. The museum shows tools and exhibits from the everyday work of miners. In the associated Leogang show mine you can immerse yourself in the world of a miner. Experience the demands on mine workers and go underground for a while.
#6: Areit 1400, Zell am See-Kaprun
Near the areitXpress mountain station you will find the old Areitbahn I mountain station. And this one has a lot to offer. The interactive exhibition Areit 1400 invites you to discover vintage cars, historic scooters and skis. You learn how people travelled in times gone by. You can also find out what the future might bring.
#7: Schmitten exhibition
Another autumnal destination in Salzburg, especially if you are staying in one of our VAYAs, is the Schmitten exhibition. It is entitled “90 Years of Tradition & Innovation”. Here you can gain creative insights into the history of the mountain railways.
#8: Knights’ castle & giant ice world, Werfen
Have you always wondered what life was like as a knight? Then Hohenwerfen Castle in Salzburg’s Pongau region is the place for you. The castle towers over things at an altitude of over 900 metres. Visit the falconry, go on a journey of discovery and let yourself be enchanted. One of the most popular excursion destinations in Salzburg is in the immediate vicinity and is also almost magical: the Eisriesenwelt in Werfen. It is home to the largest ice cave in the world.
