Be creative
A different kind of Christmas tree:
New trends that will enchant your living room
A Christmas tree is more than just a tree – it’s the centrepiece of the festive season. But why the same thing every year? This year is getting creative! From minimalist designs to sustainable alternatives – the trends are diverse.
Minimalism meets Christmas: Less is more
Few, but purposefully used baubles in white, silver or pastel colours are a hit. Combined with simple Christmas lights, they create a sophisticated look. Tip: Go for handmade individual pieces for a personal touch.
Sustainability is in: Upcycling for the tree
Old fabric scraps, glass bottles or corks? Make them the highlight of your tree! Sustainable ornaments are not only trendy, they also make a statement. Make pendants from salt dough or use old CDs as shiny eye-catchers.
DIY

Quick ideas for craft fans
- Oranges and cinnamon: Dried fruit and spices smell wonderful and look fantastic. Simply hang them on the branches with a ribbon.
- Paper art: Make stars, angels or snowflakes from colourful paper – simple and inexpensive.
- Macramé ornaments: These filigree works of art are right on trend and are a real eye-catcher.
Instructions
Two simple instructions for creating enchanting Christmas tree ornaments
Homemade ornaments not only give your tree a personal touch, they’re also great fun! And the best thing is: these DIYs are so easy that even crafting novices can do them.
1. Cinnamon star ornaments: Smell heavenly and look great
What you need:
- Cinnamon sticks (about 3 per ornament)
- Twine or a pretty ribbon
- Hot glue gun
- Small decorative elements, such as dried orange slices or star anise (optional)
This is how it’s done:
Take three cinnamon sticks and lay them together in the shape of a star. The ends should overlap slightly.
Secure the ends with a few drops of hot glue. (Tip: be careful with your fingers – hot glue is hot, the name says it all!)
Tie a piece of jute string into a loop and glue it to the back of the star. This way you can hang it up later.
For a special touch, you can decorate the star with a dried orange slice or a small star anise.
Your fragrant Christmas tree decoration is ready! Perfect for anyone who likes it classic and cosy.
2. Sparkling Christmas baubles made from transparent plastic baubles
What you need:
- Transparent craft baubles (to fill, available in craft shops)
- Glitter powder in your favourite colours
- Liquid glue (preferably transparent)
- A piece of ribbon
This is how it’s done:
Open the ball and pour a generous dollop of liquid glue inside. Twist the ball until the glue covers the inside walls.
Sprinkle glitter into the ball. Be generous – you can never have enough glitter! Shake the ball carefully so that the glitter is distributed everywhere. (Tip: work over a plate to keep the glitter chaos to a minimum).
Leave the ball to dry thoroughly and put it back together again.
Tie a pretty ribbon to the top of the bauble and voilà – your glamorous eye-catcher for the tree is ready!
Tip: If you combine different colours and sizes, your tree will be a real highlight.
Why DIY? Because it’s fun!
Homemade decorations make your Christmas tree unique and ensure lots of praise from guests. What’s more, crafting also brings a lot of Christmas spirit into the house – whether with family, friends or on a mulled wine evening alone.
So grab your craft supplies, let your creativity run wild and decorate your tree like a pro!
Unusual decorations: bold colours and shapes
This year it’s time to be bold! Neon colours, geometric shapes or even completely atypical decorations such as small stuffed animals or vintage toys set modern accents.
Retro vibes: back to the 80s
Shiny tinsel strings, brightly coloured baubles and flashing fairy lights – the retro look is making a comeback! Perfect for all those who love it flashy and nostalgic.
Tips for a harmonious Christmas tree
A few tricks to put your tree in the right light:
- Choose a colour scheme: Combine a maximum of three colours to create a harmonious look.
- Christmas lights first: Always start with the lights before adding the decorations.
- Observe symmetry: Hang heavy ornaments further down to create balance.
