What do we mean by corn snow descents?
Warm, sunny spring days make the upper layer of snow softer giving it better grip because of the sun’s rays at higher altitudes. This allows skiers to descend with more control and more safety. Skiing in the sun also offers a great opportunity to improve your technique as the soft snow forgives any mistakes or imprecisions.
Top 7 ski resorts in Austria for sunny slopes
1. Obergurgl-Hochgurgl
Snow guaranteed between 1,800 and over 3,000 metres above sea level and season until May: this is what ski and snowboard lovers can expect in Obergurgl and Hochgurgl in Tyrol. In addition to 110 kilometres of pistes, numerous ski huts and restaurants invite you to spend a day in the snow and sun. These are particularly quiet places, making them perfect for all those who simply long for sport and nature.

2. Kühtai
Thanks to its setting on the sunny plateau at over 2,000 metres above sea level, Kühtai is Austria’s highest ski village. On spring days, you can grab your skis and conquer the more than 41 kilometres of piste. The light-flooded south-facing slopes are perfect for skiing in the sun. Away from the slopes, the rich variety of off-piste terrain invites you to go on deep-powder tours.

In its typical chic VAYA design, the newly renovated VAYA Kühtai scores highly and takes pole position on the slopes. After a sunny day in the snow, the best place to relax is in the wellness zone with its sauna and steam bath, indoor pool and relaxation area.
3.St. Anton am Arlberg
Head into the sun is also the maxim in fashionable St. Anton: As high as 2,800 meters above sea level, the ski resort offers excellent snow conditions until the end of April. Offering more than enough choices for corn snow descents and skiing in the sun. More than 300 km of slopes offer perfect skiing for all proficiency levels. The Arlberg is also an absolute leading après-ski hotspot.

4. Saalbach-Hinterglemm
Die 270 Pistenkilometer des Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn können Wintersportler bis in den Frühling unsicher machen kann. Auf einer Höhe von rund 1.000 bis 2.100 Metern gelegen, findet man hier rund 70 Lifte vor, die die drei Skigebiete miteinander verbinden. Einige der Lifte tragen die Sonnenanbeter bereits ab 8 Uhr morgens in verschneite Höhen.

Nur einen Sprung von den Bergbahnen, die Wintersportler in den Skicircus hinauftransportieren, liegt das VAYA Post Saalbach. Im VAYA Bar & Grill stärkt man Hungrige mit kulinarischen Kreationen aus regionalen Produkten – und auch der Wellnessbereich kann sich sehen lassen.
5. Hintertux Glacier
Nothing in life is certain – except for the snow on Hintertux Glacier. Right into the spring and summer, it invites you to enjoy sunny skiing and corn snow skiing in full view of the peaks and glaciers of Tuxertal. Thanks to its elevation at 3,250 metres, the glacier is Austria’s only ski resort open all year round. Out the 86 kilometres of pistes, 20 still stay open in summer.

6. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis
In the mood for sun-drenched and perfectly maintained slopes? Snow sports fans have over 200 kilometres of pistes at their disposal in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis at an elevation of 1,200 to 2,820 metres. Diversity is the maxim here: on spring days, you can spend all day skiing down sunny, expansive slopes or whizzing down steep slopes. Many of the slopes are south-facing, making the snow particularly soft here.
Where to stay:
Guests at the VAYA Ladis also find themselves in immediate proximity to the closest piste in the ski resort that enjoys over 2,000 hours of sunshine a year. Also good to know: Laudeck Castle dominates the scene close to the hotel.
