Why do we celebrate Valentine's Day?
The custom of giving flowers on the 14th of February is not an invention of florists and chocolate producers. In truth, it goes back to a saint. On the 14th of February, Christians commemorate the beheading of Valentine. Depending on the source, he was either a Roman priest or the bishop of Terni. After his violent death – instigated by Emperor Aurelian – he was elevated to the status of saint. The circumstances that led to his death in 269 AD would be worthy of any great Hollywood romance. Emperor Aurelian had Valentin killed because he had resisted his ban on marrying soldiers. And then Valentin also had the audacity to give flowers to the newlyweds. Over the centuries, at least the part with the flower giving persisted. On no other day of the year are so many flowers sold as on the 14th of February.
Valentine’s Day for Singles
In Europe, Valentine’s Day is mainly a day for lovers. In other cultures, such as the USA, the situation is different. Friends and classmates also give each other Valentine’s Day cards. This has nothing to do with romantic love. Even among people who work together, the exchange of niceties on Valentine’s Day is commonplace. If you’re single, there’s nothing wrong with taking Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to say thank you to your best friend, your favorite colleague or even the postman. And maybe even to make a little joy.

Of course, it doesn’t necessarily take a special day to show loved ones what they mean to us. You should do that regularly anyway. But not to do it on Valentine’s Day of all days would also be a pity. But are there other no-gos for Valentine’s Day – except to forget it? Yes! Valentine’s Day is not about getting the most expensive gifts possible. It’s all about showing that you’ve thought about someone.
