But have you ever wondered why wine from Austria tastes so incredibly good? And what does a UNESCO World Heritage Site have to do with it? We’ll tell you everything about wine from the Wachau.
Diverse landscape
About 80 kilometers west of the capital Vienna lies a special cultural landscape in a valley of the Danube, between Melk and Krems an der Donau. It has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2000 and is known for its picturesque villages and wine-growing. Here, more than 200 members of the winegrowers’ association Domäne Wachau produce wines in more than 100 individual vineyards and on 1,350 hectares, which are known all over the world. In addition to wine, the famous Wachau apricot is one of the export hits of this region.
But why is wine from the Wachau so delicious? The microclimate in this area plays an important role. The vines grow on sunny slopes. Warm Pannonian climate from the east and temperate, Atlantic air from the west and wetter, cooler air from the north has a positive influence on the taste. In addition, the soils are partly sandy. In combination with weathered primary rock soils, they form the basis for the special, mineral taste.
Wine from the Wachau goes VAYA
It is mainly Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and Müller-Thurgau, which are grown in the Wachau. The most popular among them: Grüner Veltliner from the Wachau. It scores with its ripe, powerful fragrance and its fruity, slightly citric aromas. The wine is velvety, supple and has a high presence in the mouth. In terms of red wine, Zweigelt dominates the cultivation areas.
